Why Business Websites Need Ongoing Security Maintenance

There’s a lot more to keeping a business website safe and secure than what you see on the screen. Behind the scenes, there’s a whole lot of work going into keeping everything running smoothly, protecting against potential threats and making sure everything works exactly as it should.

Most of the time, you’ll never even know it’s happening. But this week was a pretty good reminder of just how important it is

Two critical security vulnerabilities emerged in PHP, the technology behind millions of websites worldwide. With a severity rating of 9.2 out of 10, they presented a serious risk to potentially affected websites.

Thankfully, our tech team had already sprung into action.

What was the PHP2Shell security vulnerability?

On 20 October 2026, details emerged of two critical security vulnerabilities in PHP, collectively known as PHP2Shell.

PHP is the technology used by popular website platforms, including WordPress and Statamic. These vulnerabilities could potentially allow attackers to gain control of affected servers without needing a password.

When your website is responsible for generating enquiries, processing orders or keeping customers connected, its security really matters. And with vulnerabilities like these, having the right people ready to respond can make all the difference.

How we kept our clients’ websites protected

While most of the country was getting on with their Wednesday morning, our technical team was busy making sure our clients’ websites were protected.

By 9:45am on 21 October, we’d already introduced protective measures across every server we manage, hours before an official fix became available.

We reviewed our hosting environments, tightened security controls and restricted potential entry points while waiting for the official updates.

And when those updates arrived, we got straight to work.

Within two hours, every server hosting our clients’ websites had been patched, with each website checked afterwards to make sure everything was running as expected.

No disruption, no unnecessary headaches or extra jobs landing on our clients’ desks. Just the peace of mind that everything was being looked after.

And our technical team doing what they do best.

Why proactive website security matters

When people think about a great website, it’s usually the things they can see that spring to mind. Beautiful design, clever features and those little details that make everything feel just right. And we’re certainly not going to argue with that.

We’re some of the biggest advocates for getting those things spot on.

But while the design gets all the glory, there’s plenty of important work happening behind the scenes.

From keeping software up to date to monitoring emerging security threats, proactive website maintenance helps businesses stay protected and avoid unnecessary disruption.

Not exactly the showbiz side of website development, but essential nonetheless.

Because an outdated website isn’t always just one that looks a little past its best. Outdated software and unresolved vulnerabilities can put your website, your business and the trust you’ve built with customers at risk.

What should you expect from your website support provider?

Good website support shouldn’t start with a panicked phone call when something breaks.

It should include regular security updates, proactive vulnerability monitoring, secure hosting, reliable backups and a team that knows what to do when a threat emerges.

A good place to start is by asking a few simple questions:

  • Who’s responsible for keeping everything updated?
  • Is someone actively monitoring for security vulnerabilities?
  •  Are reliable backups in place?
  • What happens when a serious security threat emerges?

If you’re not sure of the answers, it’s worth having a conversation with whoever looks after your website.

Most importantly, you should feel confident that someone’s keeping an eye on things.

You have a business to run, after all.

Looking after your website long after launch

At Giant Peach, we don’t believe in building beautiful websites, handing over the keys and disappearing into the sunset.

We’re in it for the long haul.

That means continually improving our clients’ websites, keeping everything running as it should and making sure the technical foundations are properly looked after.

Sometimes that involves launching exciting new features, improving performance or finding new ways to help a business grow.

Other times, it means responding to a critical security threat before it has the chance to cause problems.

It’s not necessarily the work that gets people talking.

But it’s the work that gives our clients one less thing to worry about.

Want a little more peace of mind about how your website is being looked after? We’re always happy to talk things through.
