Since 1992 Fairtrade has supported farmers and workers in gaining more from trade – and through this they are empowered to control their lives. It is an alternative approach that is based on partnership – one between those who grow our food and us as consumers. Fairtrade Fortnight is running from 23rd February to 8th March to raises awareness of the scheme and the people it helps.

When you buy products with the Fairtrade Mark, you support farmers and workers as they work to improve their lives and their communities. The Mark is only applicable for products where the Fairtrade ingredients have been produced by small-scale farmer organisations or plantations that meet Fairtrade social, economic and environmental standards.

Growers in the scheme are also entitled to Fairtrade Premium – an additional sum of money paid on top of the Fairtrade Minimum Price that farmers and workers receive which can be invested in social, environmental and economic developmental projects of their choice to improve their businesses and their communities. In real terms, it means investment in schools, transport, health care, sanitation, an improved environment and better business equipment and practices.

Fairtrade Fortnight showcases the people and places that the initiative helps, so check it out and see for yourself how small changes in your purchasing habits can make a big difference to farmers and their families.

At Giant Peach we can’t get enough of our Fairtrade teas, coffees and chocolate (if you manage to get to it before Corrina, that is.) They fuel us through the day, and what’s even better, we can enjoy them guilt-free! Hurrah!
